Cody Bellinger was pulled from the Chicago Cubs vs. Baltimore Orioles game in the seventh inning this Wednesday. It happened because he got hit in the hand by a pitch from Cionel Perez. This poses yet another injury threat to the Chicago Cubs just ahead of the All-Star break.
After taking the hit, Bellinger made his way to first base. He remained there for the remaining part of the top half of the inning. The Marquee Sports Network instantly posted a snippet of the contact on X (formerly Twitter) for the fans to watch.
The moment he made contact with the 97-mph sinker, he was approached by the manager, Craig Counsell, and one of the athletic trainers. The game was interrupted later by the rain, with the Cubs leading the scoreboard with a 3-0 lead against the Orioles. However, Bellinger was replaced after the bottom of the seventh inning by Miles Mastrobuoni.
If this contact poses a serious injury, it could hamper the prospects of Bellinger playing for the rest of the season. In addition, it could also be problematic for his positioning as a potential trade candidate with the Phillies and Mariners.
Cody Bellinger will "wait for the CT scan"
Chicago Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger left the game after going 2-for-3 at the plate. While the early exit is concerning, Bellinger's overall performance this season paints a much rosier picture.
Currently boasting a .741 OPS and nine home runs, Bellinger has emerged as a crucial offensive weapon for manager Craig Counsell. His versatility is another valuable asset, allowing Counsell to deploy him effectively in center field, right field, or even first base to maximize offensive output.
As of now, there are not many updates about the injury, but Cody Bellinger has talked to the Marquee Sports Network about his injury during the game.
"Yeah, I went down in the dugout and gripped a baseball and just couldn't trust myself. I needed to make a throw and so I just decided at the end that just come out of the game and try and you know get some ice on it," Bellinger said. "You know, there's some positives and negatives to it. You know, it's just super swollen right now. The range of motion is pretty good, but I've learned that you just got to wait for the CT scan so you can make any opinions on it."
The fingers are crossed, and now the CT scan will present a clearer picture of the injury update for Bellinger.
