After losing out on Juan Soto, the New York Yankees made a solid move on Tuesday by acquiring Cody Bellinger. They acquired Bellinger along with $5 million in cash considerations in a trade from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for pitcher Cody Poteet.
Interestingly, Cody won't be the first Bellinger to play for the New York Yankees. His father Clay Bellinger was a part of the Yankees during his Major League career.
On Tuesday, MLB shared an iconic video featuring Clay Bellinger as a Yankee, which has gone viral:
“It’s a family thing… Cody Bellinger’s dad, Clay, hit his first Major League home run with the Yankees,” the caption read.
In the video, Clay Bellinger is shown hitting the first home run of his MLB career while wearing the Yankees' pinstripes. He hit the shot to left field, and the entire old Yankee Stadium erupted in cheers, with fans giving him a standing ovation.
Clay Bellinger played for the New York Yankees from 1999 to 2001, appearing in 181 games, becoming a two-time World Series champion. In 2002, he was a part of the Anaheim Angels but only played two games.
Cody Bellinger could be a key addition for the Yankees in the 2025 season
Cody Bellinger is a two-time All-Star, a 2020 World Champion, a Gold Glove winner and a two-time Silver Slugger Award recipient. He was also the National League Most Valuable Player in 2019.
Bellinger signed a three-year, $80 million contract with the Chicago Cubs in February. He's set to make $27.5 million in the 2025 season and has a player option for $25 million in 2026.
Bellinger is a versatile player, known for his strong defense in center field, but he can also play left field if the Yankees use rookie Jasson Dominguez in center. Additionally, with Anthony Rizzo becoming a free agent, Bellinger could be a great option to play first base for the Yankees.
In 2024 with the Chicago Cubs, Bellinger posted a .266 batting average, with 18 home runs, 78 RBIs, 45 walks and a .751 OPS in 130 games.
