While the Los Angeles Dodgers lead the New York Yankees in the World Series, the NL West team suffered a blow in Game 2 after Shohei Ohtani injured himself.
The Dodgers superstar seemingly injured his left arm while trying to steal second base. Ohtani remained on the ground after his brave sliding attempt and exited the game with a trainer holding his left arm.
The two-time MVP seemingly sustained the injury in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Dodgers leading 4-1 on the back of home runs from Tommy Edman, Teoscar Hernandez and Freddie Freeman.
Although there is no official update on Ohtani's injury yet, senior MLB insider Ken Rosenthal reported the Japanese slugger has sustained a shoulder injury.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts reflects on Shohei Ohtani's shoulder injury
Following the Dodgers' 4-2 win in Game 2 of the World Series on Saturday, manager Dave Roberts updated on the Japanese superstar's reported shoulder injury.
While Roberts is unsure about the extent of the injury, Ohtani will undergo MRI and further scans before travelling to New York for the next three games of the Fall Classic.
Ohtani had the best output in terms of base running this season and Roberts said there was no issues with the two-time MVP's attempted steal.
“He’s a pretty astute baserunner,” Roberts said. “With two outs right there, to try to tack on in a World Series game, it was the right play. [It’s] just, baseball happens.”
NLCS MVP Tommy Edman continued his hot streak in the postseason with a solo home run to start the scoring for the Dodgers in Game 2. Edman reflected on the injury concern to his teammate, saying:
“Obviously that’s a huge bummer. He’s the best player in the game, and to see him on the ground in pain, it’s not a good feeling for sure. I don’t know if any reports have come out yet, but we’re hopeful he recovers quickly. We’re sending our thoughts and prayers for him.”
The Dodgers' have a day's time to assess Ohtani's should issue as the team will travel to the Bronx for Game 3 scheduled for Monday.
