All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup for the first time since July 26 for the game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday.
Freeman missed the last eight games for the Dodgers after his youngest son, Max, was diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder last month. Max was subsequently hospitalized and placed in a pediatric ICU.
Max was released from the hospital on Sunday and his father soon rejoined the Dodgers for their game against the Phillies on Monday. During his first at-bat, Dodger Stadium stood to its feet to show support for the eight-time All-Star after the trouble he and his family went through over the last two weeks.
An emotional Freeman acknowledged the vociferous support from the Dodgers faithful while standing at the plate.
The Los Angeles Dodgers currently lead the game 4-2 after the fifth inning as Teoscar Hernandez's two-run homer helped the hosts turn around a 2-0 deficit at the start of the game.
Freddie Freeman activated from restricted list following son's release from hospital; Cavin Baggio designated for assignment
Freddie Freeman's son was diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder, Guillain-Barre syndrome. In this disorder, the immune system attacks the nerves and causes paralysis.
Freddie's wife Chelsea revealed last week that Max went into full-body paralysis and was put on a ventilator. However, after eight days in pediatric intensive care, Max was released on Sunday and is expected to regain his strength at home, though he still has trouble walking:
“It's a good thing I'm here because it means things are trending better.... No one should have to go through this, especially a three-year-old. I don’t know how many times Chelsea and I said we wish we could switch,” Freeman said about his son's recovery ahead of Monday's game.
The Dodgers All-Star, who was put on the restricted list by the team during his family's tough time, was reactivated on Monday with Cavan Biggio taking the fall to make room on the 40-man roster.
Biggio was designated for assignment and will be placed on waivers.
