Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was ejected for the first time this season during the rubber game of the series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.
The Dodgers were in an intense contest with the National League East leaders, who fought their way back into the series after taking the last game on Tuesday. During the top of the sixth inning of the series finale, Brandon Marsh's bunt was collected by Kike Hernandez, who relayed it to shortstop Miguel Rojas at third base to tag out Alec Bohm.
However, the umpire called defensive interference on Rojas, deeming Bohm the same. Dave Roberts confronted the umpire, as the replays showed no interference from Rojas. Roberts was livid with the controversial call and let his feelings known to the umpire, leading to his ejection from the game.
Here's the video of his ejection:
Roberts' frustration was understandable, as the controversial call came at a crucial juncture of the game. The frustration at Dodger Stadium reached fever pitch as the Phillies took the lead off a wild pitch with the bases loaded in the same inning following the controversial incident.
Phillies take advantage of the controversial call against Dodgers to end their series drought
The Phillies scored five runs in the inning, courtesy of Kyle Schwarber's three-run homer off veteran reliever Joe Kelly. It was Schwarber's second home run of the game after his leadoff homer in the top of the first inning to open the scoring on Wednesday.
ESPN broadcaster Jessica Mendoza, who calls games for the Dodgers, was perplexed by the controversial call and let her confusion known while calling the play:
"What else is Miguel Rojas supposed to do? He's gotta run to the bag and when you run to the bag, you will be in the basepaths to be able to get there and make this play."
The Phillies eventually won 9-4 to clinch the series, marking their first series victory since the All-Star break last month following five series losses.
