The San Diego Padres dominated the Atlanta Braves, thanks in no small part to Fernando Tatis Jr.'s performance. Over two games, the Padres outscored the Braves 9-4, winning both to move on to the NLDS, where they have a date with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
After fans celebrated the win on Wednesday night, Tatis soaked everything in. Fans began to serenade everyone with "Beat LA" chants, which prompted a grin from the star outfielder.
Here's the video:
Tatis was putting on his celebratory shirt for the ensuing party in the locker room and the photos taken after winning a playoff series. He grinned widely as fans got loud with their desire to see the Dodgers knocked off by the Padres.
The Dodgers won the NL West and the NL's top seed, giving them a bye week. The Padres, by virtue of winning the first wild-card spot, are headed to Los Angeles for a matchup that begins on Saturday.
Padres looking forward to Dodgers matchup
It's not often that two division rivals face each other in the playoffs. The last time the two did, the San Diego Padres stunned the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS. The Dodgers will look for revenge, while the Padres will hope to repeat the result.
Padres manager Mike Shildt said via ESPN:
"We fought tooth and nail to get to the end of the season, for the division. But now we're in the part of the season where winner moves on, and we wouldn't want it any other way. It's going to be a wonderful series. We're super excited about it. Can't wait."
Catcher Kyle Higashioka, who came over in the Juan Soto trade with the New York Yankees, said:
"This team's always shown the ability to be resilient and never quit. That's a credit to all the guys. Just putting together good at-bats no matter what."
They will need to put together good at-bats to defeat the team with baseball's best record. Manny Machado said that it's what his team wanted, a matchup with the best of the best and a chance to pull off another upset in the playoffs.
