The Los Angeles Dodgers are one of baseball's most storied franchises. They hosted Alumni Night on Saturday, a celebratory event where they brought back team legends to honor them and have fans get to see them one more time. It involved five different eras of superstars from the team's history.
Steve Garvey, Matt Kemp, and other former Dodgers stars went to the mound to throw ceremonial first pitches. In near synchronicity, the five stars harkened back to their playing days and delivered their throws to the home plate, where other former Dodgers stars caught them.
This was part of a weekend of festivities to honor the team's long and rich history. Rick Dempsey, Eric Karros, Nomar Garciaparra, Shawn Green, Tommy John, Manny Mota, Wes Parker, Reggie Smith, Steve Yeager, and current Dodgers manager Dave Roberts all made appearances for it.
Former Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker was also honored and Walter O'Malley was inducted into the Ring of Honor.
It was a big weekend for Dodgers fans and their former players, who came together for an event unlike any other in baseball.
Dodgers icon Steve Garvey is running for office
Los Angeles Dodgers icon Steve Garvey, a one-time MVP and a member of the 1981 World Series team, is one of the most active former Dodgers.
He is currently embroiled in a tense run for Congress in California. He's attempting to do something somewhat unprecedented: win in California as a Republican. Garvey is attempting to oust Adam Schiff, the Democratic incumbent.
In fact, a few weeks ago, reports from Cal Matters surfaced that he had raised more campaign money than Schiff, although he was still trailing Schiff in total financials in their battle.
However, the fact that Garvey raised more than Schiff by at least $1 million is not insignificant. It suggests that the tide might be turning and he might have a shot in this race. It's a long shot, but Garvey isn't totally out of it.
