LA Dodgers star Freddie Freeman smashed a 423-foot grand slam in extras to help his team clinch Game 1 of the World Series against the New York Yankees on Friday. The injury-riddled first baseman swung at the first pitch he saw from Nestor Cortes Jr. and sent it to the stands in Dodger Stadium.
It was the first-ever walk-off grand slam in World Series history.
The Yankees were leading heading into the bottom of the 10th after Anthony Volpe's grounder was fumbled by Dodgers shortstop Tommy Edman. New York had two men on base with Jazz Chisholm Jr. at third and Anthony Rizzo at first. With Edman's blunder, Chisholm got to home plate while Rizzo was caught out while running to second.
In the bottom of the 10th, Yankees reliever Jake Cousins walked Gavin Lux with a man out. Tommy Edman then advanced Lux as his grounder was missed by Oswaldo Cabrera. With Shohei Ohtani about to bat, skipper Aaron Boone chose to replace Cousins with lefty starter Nestor Cortes Jr. to make life difficult for the Japanese.
Lux, who was at second, was then replaced by pinch-runner Chris Taylor. Ohtani smashed a towering fly ball off Cortes Jr. to the right-field stands but former Dodger Alex Verdugo chased and caught it to force another man out for Los Angeles.
With two outs remaining, the Yankees elected to walk former MVP Mookie Betts. With the bases loaded, they then faced another MVP in the form of Freddie Freeman. This time, however, the visiting team ran out of luck as Freeman smashed a no-doubter to right field to seal Game 1 of the World Series for the Dodgers.
Freddie Freeman's injury concerns leading up to World Series
Dodgers star Freddie Freeman has not looked 100% during the postseason. The former MVP has been dealing with a nagging ankle injury sustained during the team's final regular-season series against the Colorado Rockies.
He has already missed three playoff games as a result of the injury. Moreover, he seemed to have re-aggravated it against the San Diego Padres in Game 3 of the NLDS.
Despite the discomfort, Freeman has continued to show his competitive spirit and soldiered on to help them clinch the opening game of the Fall Classic.
