Friday night's game between the San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies had one rare umpire interference, robbing the former an opportunity to pile up the runs. During the fourth inning at Coors Field, with men on first and second, Giants hitter Brett Wisely hit a line drive that was on its way for a hit at least, if not an extra-base hit.

However, the ball ricocheted off the first base umpire to land near Rockies first baseman Michael Toglia, who then caught Wisely short off first base for the second out of the inning. At the time, the Giants were leading 3-0 and if not for the interference, they could have added a few more and taken a commanding grip of the game.

For those confused about why it was given out despite the ball ricocheting off the umpire, the MLB rules state:

"If a thrown ball accidentally touches a base coach, or a pitched or thrown ball touches an umpire, the ball is alive and in play."

Rockies ace Cal Quantrill then struck out Jorge Soler to end the inning without any further damage to the scoreboard.

As fate would have it, the Giants, who led the ballgame 3-0 until the fifth inning, will undoubtedly be upset by the play that possibly robbed them of a potential 4-0 or 5-0 lead. Instead, however, the 3-0 lead was subdued by the Rockies later in the game as they went on to defeat their NL rivals 7-3.

Brenton Doyle blasted a two-run homer against Randy Rodriguez to cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth. Then, in the top of the seventh, Jake Cave scored on an error as Ryan Walker sustained a tie, escaping a jam for the Giants.

Cave followed the game-tying score with a three-run home run against Tyler Rogers to take a 6-3 lead in the ball game. The Giants then called up their new pitcher, Luke Jackson, who gave up a home run, this time to Ezequeil Tover, to bring the lead to 7-3, which was maintained as the Rockies' bullpen pitchers did well to stop the Giants' offense.

With the win, the Giants dropped to 47-51, while the Rockies improved to 35-63. The two meet again on Saturday where Colorado will hope to seal the three-game series.
