Jose Altuve hit a walk-off double to lead the Astros to a win against the Kansas City Royals at Minute Maid Park on Friday. The win ensured Houston held onto its four-game lead at the top of the AL West and won three in a row for the first since Aug. 19.
Heading into the ninth, the Astros lead 2-0. The Royals tied the game in the top half of the inning with a two-run home run by Paul DeJong. Later in the bottom half, with two outs, Jake Meyers at first and 0-1 count, Jose Altuve hit a double towards left that bounced off the out-of-town scoreboard just beneath the Crawford Boxes.
As soon as Meyers rounded the bases, Astros players stormed the field and serenaded the veteran with a Gatorade bath. Both the bullpen and the dugout emptied to celebrate with Altuve on the pitch. The 34-year-old had earlier singled in the third to make it a 2-5 game on the night.
The Astros second baseman spoke about the opportunity that was presented to him after Meyers got to base. He also acknowledged the importance of the win as the team was able to win the second of a four-game series against a hot Kansas City Royals roster.
“I think the fact Jake got on base and gave us the opportunity to score a run there and come back and win this game is huge,” Altuve said.
Joe Espada "wowed" by Jose Altuve's heroics
Astros manager Joe Espada was delighted by the 34-year-old's continued prowess at the plate. He added that Altuve was the person Houston could always rely on to deliver when they are in need of a ninth innings rescue.
“This is the guy you want in that spot. He always finds a way to wow us,” Espada said. “That’s another big swing by Jose Altuve.”
Jose Altuve has been consistent yet again for the Astros, batting at .298 this season with 160 hits, 57 RBIs and 18 home runs. He also recorded 20 stolen bases and stands just two blasts from his third 20-20 season and first since 2017.
