No Hall of Fame for Jose Canseco
With the recent announcement of the 2025 Baseball Hall of Fame class, the discussion of Jose Canseco’s absence from the Hall has renewed strength. The former Oakland Athletic's great appeared on the Hall of Fame ballot once in 2007, getting a total of six votes.
Those six votes were good enough for 1.1%, leaving Jose Canseco woefully short of the 5% threshold to remain on the ballot for one more year.
The controversy surrounding Canseco’s admitted use of performance-enhancing drugs (PED), led the Baseball Writer’s Association to single out Canseco as unworthy of Hall of Fame induction despite his impressive credentials.
Other players involved in the PED scandal, such as Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Mark McGwire, among others, have also fallen off the Hall of Fame ballot.
While some “steroid-era” players like Clemens and Bonds received as much as 50% of the votes, they did not get close to the 75% needed for enshrinement.
With Canseco off the ballot, his case could be taken up by the Veteran’s Committee at some point down the road. The Veteran’s Committee meets every other year to discuss players who were not elected during their regular time on the ballot.
The Committee doesn’t always elect players and tends to have stricter standards than the traditional panel. Perhaps the Veteran’s Committee may soften its stance on players accused of allegedly using PEDs, allowing them to join the select few in Cooperstown.
However, there is no indication at the moment that could be the case. There’s no telling how much longer players like Canseco, Bonds, or Clemens may have to wait.
