After opening their three-game series with a stellar 6-0 victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the San Diego Padres began the second game of their series at PNC Park. The Wednesday night game saw the Padres struggle from the first inning.
However, the real bad news for them came in the sixth inning when their top-of-the-lineup player, Jurickson Profar, was hit by a pitch. After Luis Arraez started the inning by grounding out, Profar took the plate.
Facing Pirates pitcher Hunter Stratton, Jurickson Profar received a strike and a ball before being hit by a 94.8 mph fastball in his right knee. Profar, who initially tried to reach first base, suddenly threw his helmet and dropped to the ground, visibly in tremendous pain.
The 2024 All-Star, who couldn't properly walk or stand, was approached by his teammates and other staff members for aid. Despite the pain, he refused to leave and went to first base.
Xander Bogaerts then took the plate and hit a single, allowing Jurickson Profar to reach second base. After reaching second, he was seen struggling in pain and eventually decided to leave the game.
Pinch-runner Ha-Seong Kim replaced Jurickson Profar at second base but he didn't get an opportunity to advance, as Manny Machado popped out and Donovan Solano flew out, ending the sixth inning.
Jurickson Profar had three at-bats with no hits as the Padres trailed 5-6 against the Pirates by the eighth inning
Before leaving the game, Jurickson Profar had three at-bats without any hits or RBIs. The Pittsburgh Pirates had held a 2-0 lead since the first inning, thanks to singles by Rowdy Tellez and Ke'Bryan Hayes.
San Diego Padres’ Jackson Merrill brought in a run with a 442-foot homer in the second inning. The Pirates also scored a run in the same inning.
Kyle Higashioka hit a 420-foot home run, his 14th of the season, in the fourth inning, giving the Padres a 4-3 lead. However, the Pirates’ Andrew McCutchen tied the score with a 407-foot homer.
Jackson Merrill later hit an RBI single in the fifth inning, bringing in a run. The Pirates responded by scoring two runs in the following inning.
At the time of writing, Padres player Jackson Merrill had tied the score at 6-6 with a 411-foot homer.
