Kaelen Culpepper has been selected as the 21st draft pick by the Minnesota Twins in the 2024 MLB Draft. Culpepper changed his position from 2B/3B to shortstop during his junior season at Kansas State.
When commissioner Rob Manfred announced his name for his selection with the Minnesota Twins, he was seen on the camera holding his parents' hands. The moment the news became real, he stood up and instantly hugged his mother and then his father.
Culpepper could be seen shedding tears as the realization of his selection in the major league set in. The whole video was quite emotional and showed the value of this moment for SS Kaelen Culpepper.
In the 2024 season, Culpepper slashed .328/.419/.574 and has managed to bat 11 homers and steal 17 bases. He's a great player, be it on the defense or the offense, he walked 35 times and struck out 41 hitters.
This is the second time since 2021 that a player from Kansas State got selected in the draft's first round. Last time, it happened with the Chicago Cubs pitcher Jordan Wick, who was also the 21st draft pick overall.
Kaelen Culpepper talks about his emotional response during the MLB draft
Kaelen Culpepper's journey to the MLB Draft wasn't paved with exposure to prestigious situations. Growing up in Memphis, Tennessee, Culpepper honed his baseball skills away from the national limelight. Often the only black players on his teams, he and his brother faced financial limitations that restricted access to high-profile tournaments.
Despite these obstacles, Culpepper's commitment to the sport remained resolute. Surrounded by loved ones at the draft, Culpepper witnessed the culmination of their shared dream as his name was called. Speaking with Xavier Scruggs of MLB Network, Culpepper talked about his moment with his parents backstage.
"I mean, when you look back at the journey that I've been through, I mean, all those hard times, all the adversity I've been through, it just means so much. This is all, this is the result of it right here," Culpepper said.
"I mean, all my family back there, you know, they all understand how hard I worked and just what it took to, what it took to get here and all that. I'm just really happy. It's full of excitement right now.
So, it's to be seen what position Kaelen Culpepper will adapt to in his tenure with the Twins. He could either become a 2B/3B position or he could continue his play as a shortstop.
