Atlanta Braves fans stood on their feet to pay respect to Hall of Fame manager Bobby Cox as he was in attendance at Truist Park. Cox was the special guest and came out after the third inning of Saturday night's Atlanta Braves vs. Philadelphia Phillies game.
The public address announcer Kevin Kraus took the moment to introduce the 83-year-old legend, while the fans roared with excitement. The MLB reporter Rick Farlow shared the video of Cox waving to the crowd on X.
Bobby Cox led the Braves to victory in the 1995 World Series. He was also in charge as they claimed 14 consecutive division titles and five NL pennants. He spent 25 years as Braves boss and finished with a record of 2,149-1,709.
He retired after the 2010 season and got enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014. The Atlanta Braves also retired his No. 6 in the memory of his great stint as their manager.
This was Cox’s first official public appearance after he suffered a stroke in 2019. He stayed hidden in the crowd during his prior appearances at Truist Park.
In his private box, he was accompanied by his wife Pam, who was touched by the reaction of the crowd.
Bobby Cox met the Atlanta Braves players in the clubhouse on Saturday
Bobby Cox paid a visit to the Braves clubhouse right before their game against the Phillies. Braves manager Brian Snitker, who sees Cox as a mentor, felt honored by the former manager’s presence at the game.
During the standing ovation, he was spotted looking at Cox’s private box and joined in the applause. Snitker keeps a close relationship with his mentor and keeps visiting him from time to time. He even talked about Cox’s visit to the clubhouse before the game with Ken Rosenthal of FOX Broadcast.
“It means everything. It’s just so cool to get him out here,” said Snitker.
Cox’s magic seemed to have worked since the Atlanta Braves defeated the Philadelphia Phillies with a 5-1 lead. Cox also made a significant contribution to the 2021 World Series victory for the Braves, since Snitker kept visiting his former boss seeking his wisdom.
Cox hired Snitker as his third base coach back in 2007 and shaped his successor for the Braves’ bright future.
