Ahead of Game 3 of the World Series at the Bronx between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday, Grammy Award-winning artist Leslie Odom Jr. sang a passionate version of "The Star-Spangled Banner." Odom Jr. was born in New York City and has made his name in the entertainment industry after spending several years in Broadway.
Clad in a black New York Yankees jacket, the musical superstar delivered a heartfelt edition of the national anthem on a chilly October night in New York. Here's the video:
Odom Jr. came into the mainstream after his portrayal of former Unites States vice-president Aaron Burr opposite Lin Manuel-Miranda's Alexander Hamilton in the musical Hamilton. The performance earned the musical veteran a Tony Award and Grammy Award.
He also starred in the critically acclaimed movie insipired by the musical named One Night in Miami that told the story of iconic African-American icons like Malcolm X, Cassius Clay, Jim Brown and Sam Cooke after meeting up in February 1964.
Before lending his voice to the World Series, Leslie Odom Jr. had sung "America the Beautiful" during Super Bowl LII between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots.
World Series jitters at home for the Yankees
The New York Yankees have gone down 3-0 in the World Series after a 4-2 defeat in their first home game of the Fall Classic.
Freddie Freeman opened the scoring for the Dodgers with a two-run blast in the first inning, which extended the tally of the former MVP to four-consecutive World Series games with a home run. Mookie Betts added on to the scoring after driving home Tommy Edman through a single in the top of the third inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Yankees tried to get something going as Anthony Volpe hit a liner to left field, prompting New York to wave in Giancarlo Stanton. However, Teoscar Hernandez threw a bullet to catcher Will Smith to keep the home squad scoreless as Stanton was caught at home plate.
Kike Hernandez pushed the score to 4-0 in the top of the sixth to drive in Gavin Lux. The Yankees couldn't make the comeback in the two half innings to respond to the Dodgers' rock-solid bullpen.
