The San Diego Padres punched their postseason ticket this year following a disappointing season in 2023. It couldn't have come at a better time as they defeated division rivals the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday to seal their playoff spot.
Following their win in the series opener against the Dodgers, the Padres players indulged in a wild celebration in the clubhouse. Amidst the celebration, All-Star slugger Manny Machado gave a shoutout to teammate Ha-seong Kim.
During an interview with Tony Gwynn Jr. Machado saw Ha-seong Kim FaceTiming one of his teammates. Machado grabbed the phone and showed love to his teammate who is recovering from a shoulder injury.
"We love you baby. You gonna celebrate with us too baby!" Machado shouted after saying 'I love you' in Korean.
Ha-Seong Kim injured his shoulder in August and hasn't been a part of the team for over a month. The Gold Glove winner is reportedly continuing his rehab but is unlikely to play any role in the Padres' remaining regular season games.
Although there has been no set timeline for the 30-year-old's return, Kim could make a return to the Padres lineup sometime during the postseason, depending on the team's run in the playoffs.
Manny Machado hails "whole effort as organization" after sealing postseason berth
Manny Machado was at the heart of celebrations on Tuesday night. He contributed to an incredible game-ending triple play that helped the Padres confirm their playoff spot at the home of their fierce rivals.
Manny Machado said he relished the opportunity to represent the team after a disappointing injury-riddled season last year which saw the team miss out on the playoffs.
“We enjoy playing every single day. Coming to the ballpark has been fun every single day,” Machado said. “Guys have stepped up big-time. It’s taken a whole effort as an organization to be where we’re at today.”
Although they have ensured a route to October baseball, the Padres can have another celebration if they topple the Dodgers for the NL West title. However, their bid took a blow on Wednesday after a narrow loss to the division rivals, restoring the Dodgers' three-game lead at the top with four games remaining in the regular season.
