Francisco Lindor started his campaign in August with a bunt hit that was part of a 13-hit night and an eventual 5-1 win against the Los Angeles Angels. Lindor's bunt was well appreciated by his manager Carlos Mendoza, who was seen elated in the dugout.
The New York Mets had yet another strong showing as they brushed aside the Halos in the three-game series opener at Angel Stadium. New York has an impressive 18-12 record in the last 30 games and is just 0.5 games behind the last National League Wild Card spot in a season that was considered to be one to rebuild.
One of the primary stars of the team has been Francisco Lindor, who has emerged as a dugout leader. His .282 batting average in the last two months and .931 OPS have propelled him to be a contender for the National League MVP.
On Friday he started the month with a 1-for-5 game with two strikeouts. His solitary hit came off a bunt in the top of the sixth against Angels reliever Mike Baumann. On a 1-for-1 count 97 mph pitch, Lindor calmly bunted the ball towards the left infield. Baumann was late to throw to first base and Lindor reached safely.
As he reached first base, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza could be seen cheering him on. The skipper was pleased after Lindor reached base despite failing to connect in any of the three previous at-bats. The four-time All-Star would later score in the innings on an error by the Angels shortstop Zach Neto.
Francisco Lindor is an NL Player of the Month contender for July
Francisco Lindor was snubbed from the 2024 MLB All-Star Game for the fifth straight season. But the Mets shortstop became one of the fastest to earn "MVP" chants from the crowd after not making it to the showcase fixture. Lindor's stat line in July saw him register a .274 batting average, a .941 OPS, 23 RBIs and nine home runs. Figures that are certainly enough to be a contender for the National League.
The 30-year-old hasn't won the award since May 2018 when he was with the Cleveland Indians in the American League. If he wins, he will dislodge Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper from earning the award for a third straight month.
