Shohei Ohtani drew the applause from the Dodger Stadium when he went out to the plate during the game against the Tampa Bay Rays. But it was his Dodgers teammate Miguel Rojas who put himself on the receiving end of the "MVP" chants in a rib-tickling exchange with fans.
Shohei Ohtani hit a National League leading 41st home run in the game on Saturday. Coming to the plate in the fifth innings, he struck a 92 mph splitter in the corner right field that just went above the fence. His two-run blast also plated Rojas, who had in the previous at-bat hit an RBI single himself.
The batting order rotated in the seventh innings when Ohtani followed the veteran 35-year-old to the plate. Only this time, Rojas had went yard for a solo home run to left field to give the team a 7-5 advantage.
During Ohtani's at-bat, fans behind the dugout started chanting 'MVP'. Miggy came out of the dugout and did a celebratory curtain call gesture soaking in the admiration.
Here's the video of the hilarious incident:
Earlier in the game, Rojas hit his fourth home run of the season. He's batting at .287 with 28 RBIs and 30 runs scored in 80 games.
Miggy has been used as a key replacement in the infield when LA have faced injuries. His experience and leadership have also motivated a lot of youngsters in the clubhouse.
Dodgers lose in extra innings despite Shohei Ohtani-Miguel Rojas brilliance
Both Shohei Ohtani and Miguel Rojas had multi-hit nights and scored two RBIs for the team. The Dodgers went behind early as Clayton Kershaw earned four runs in the first innings. But the home team came back to lead 7-5 by the seventh innings.
The Los Angeles bullpen gave away two runs in the eighth and ninth as the game headed to extra innings. Joe Kelly, pitching the top of the tenth, earned a two-run shot off Jose Caballero. Mookie Betts pulled back a run with a sacrifice fly, but it wasn't enough as the Rays closed out the game for the win.
The Dodgers retain a three-game lead over the Diamondbacks in the NL West, while Tampa Bay is fourth in the AL East.
