There are not many baseball players that have had the influence and the impact that Willie Mays has had on players coming up. He was a great player on the field, but he might have been an even better person off of it.
Unfortunately, the baseball world lost a good one earlier this year after Mays passed away on June 18, 2024. After his passing, many athletes, not just baseball players, paid tribute to the late slugger.
With the All-Star Game setting the stage, it was only right for the league to pay tribute to Mays. They did so in a touching video narrated by various players throughout the league.
Watch the clip below:
Players like Marcus Semien, Aaron Judge, and Juan Soto took time to deliver a special message in the tribute video. It goes to show that Mays was one of the most beloved baseball players of all time.
Willie Mays made the All-Star Game his second home
Paying tribute to Willie Mays at the 2024 MLB All-Star Game makes a ton of sense. It was an event that he regularly attended during his magnificent career in the big leagues. At the end of his career, he was an All-Star more than he was not, appearing in 24 games.
Mays was in a world of his own, bringing much success to the San Francisco Giants. He helped them win the 1954 World Series title and had his No. 24 retired by both the Giants and New York Mets.
Mays then became an easy first-ballot choice to become a Hall of Famer. He received 94.7% of the votes to secure his way into the Hall in 1979. There is no denying that the baseball world lost a gift when he passed away in June.
