Mookie Betts didn't need a second invitation to get going upon his return to the Dodgers lineup after almost two months of recovery. In just his second plate appearance, Betts swung for the stands, smashing a 375-foot bomb in the left field to give an early 2-0 lead in the third inning against the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday.
This was Betts' 11th homer of the season and first since June 6. He drove an inside pitch from Freddy Peralta for a two-run home run, driving in Kike Hernandez, who started the inning with a leadoff single.
Mookie Betts was reinstated from the 60-day injured list after he was drilled on his left arm by the pitch in a mid-June game against the Kansas City Royals. Interestingly, Betts returned without any lower league rehab assignments, with the Dodgers believing in the veteran's ability.
Upon Betts' return, the Dodgers DFA'd Amed Rosario despite only acquiring him at the trade deadline two weeks ago from the Tampa Bay Rays.
Mookie Betts plays right field upon his return; says the decision to switch was "mutual"
The former World Series champion played in the infield all this year, especially the shortstop position. He did reasonably well there but now that the Dodgers have other infielders and depth, Dave Roberts has him back at the position he has played all his career in: the right field.
Ahead of Monday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Mookie Betts said the decision to move back to right field was "mutual."
“At some point you have to be real with yourself,” he said, and that best alignment back in the OF. I just want to win.”
Moreover, Mookie Betts will play behind Shohei Ohtani in the lineup in the second spot, ahead of Freddie Freeman. The reason for the switch, as said by Dave Roberts, was to separate Ohtani and Freeman, two lefties, from hitting back-to-back.
Before hitting the injured list, Betts was hitting .304 to go along with 10 home runs. 40 RBIs and nine stolen bases.
