Washington Nationals outfielder Dylan Crews was called up to make his major league debut in Monday's series opener against the New York Yankees at Nationals Park. While he had an underwhelming outing on the night which ended in a 5-2 defeat, it was an important milestone for the young rookie nonetheless.

Ahead of the game on Monday, the Nationals shared a heartwarming video on Instagram of Crews breaking the news of his debut to his mother. The post carried a caption that read, "The cutest!"

Watch the moment in the video below:

Dylan Crews was selected No. 2 overall by the Nationals in the 2023 MLB draft and spent his first season with the franchise making his way up the minor leagues. After just one game in the Florida Complex League, the outfielder went on to play for the Fredericksburg Nationals, Harrisburg Senators and Rochester Red Wings. Crews previously played college baseball with the LSU Tigers, with whom he won the Golden Spikes Award in 2023.

The Nationals entered Monday's game placed fourth in the NL East standings with a 59-72 record so far this season. They fell behind early in the first inning after a Gleyber Torres home run before Crews stepped up for his first major league at-bat to a standing ovation from the crowd. Juan Yepez and Jacob Young both homered for the Nationals later in the game but it wasn't enough to catch up to the Yankees.

In his first at-bat in the major leagues, Dylan Crews faced New York Yankees' Nestor Cortes and hit a routine fly towards right field which was caught by Juan Soto. He went on to finish his MLB debut going 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout. Speaking to the media after the game, he said:

“It was an awesome feeling to go out there for the first time and compete with the guys. Obviously, we didn’t end up winning today, but tomorrow we’re going to come out swinging.”

Crews is considered one of the top young prospects in the country. He represents an integral part of the Washington Nationals' process of rebuilding their roster, which they have been working on since 2021. With his record at the college level and the minor league, the young outfielder is certainly one to look out for in the near future.

The Nationals and Yankees meet again on Tuesday where Crews and Co. will look to keep the three-game series alive.
