The Baltimore Orioles dropped to a 4-3 loss against the New York Mets on Monday, which saw them drop to a 75-53 record, half-game behind leaders the New York Yankees in the American League East. Between the innings, Orioles ace Corbin Burnes had an altercation with the home plate umpire.
The right-hander expressed anger over the inconsistent strike zone, and he started shouting at John Tumpane, the home plate umpire, with his team in need of runs.
However, Tumpane stood his ground and didn't back up on his decision. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde stepped on the field as things escalated and tried to suppress the situation.
The Mets have won three of their last four games and are in the fourth spot in the National League Wild Card standings, one and a half games behind the Atlanta Braves.
Corbin Burnes might become a trade target for the Chicago Cubs
The 2021 NL Cy Young Winner has been an All-Star for four consecutive seasons and is attracting interest from other teams. One of the teams linked with the Orioles ace is the Chicago Cubs.
Bruce Levine mentioned that the Cubs' number one target would be Burnes, as he'll be a free agent by the end of the 2024 season. Josh Timmers of SBNation agrees with the notion and has put forward Burnes as a great choice for the Cubs.
"This, of course, makes sense. From the time that the Cubs signed Craig Counsell as their new manager, there have been those of you around here and elsewhere speculating that Burnes could follow his former manager to the North Side," Timmers wrote.
Although Burnes has been a consistent presence from the mound throughout his career, he has been shaky for the Orioles this season. He has a 3.10 ERA this season and has conceded 16 runs over 21 hits in his last three starts for the Orioles.
