The San Diego Padres' series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday proved to be a thrilling contest. After Manny Machado's late heroics, the Padres prevailed against their National League West rivals.
A record crowd at Petco Park were seemingly calm with the team heading into the ninth inning with a 7-2 lead. However, a six-run surge by the Diamondbacks in the top of the ninth shook the Padres fans.
Just when it seemed like the game had slipped from the hosts' grasp, Jurickson Profar and Manny Machado rallied to take the Padres home after a thrilling contest.
Following Machado's walk-off home run, a Padres fan ran onto the field and interrupted the Padres star's celebration with his teammates by stopping for a selfie. The streaker was apprehended swiftly as security latched onto him, tackling him to the ground.
The Diamondbacks took an early lead after Joc Pederson's two-run homer in the first inning. But the Padres fought back via NL Rookie of the Month Jackson Merrill's two-run triple in the fourth.
Merrill's effort in a four-run fourth inning helped the hosts take a 5-2 lead. Kyle Higasioka's two-run homer further solidified the lead before a six-run surge by the Snakes in the ninth inning.
Padres receive concerning injury update on Fernando Tatis Jr.
Earlier, the San Diego Padres were hit by concerning news surrounding superstar Fernando Tatis Jr., who is likely to miss the All-Star game in Texas later this month due to his injury.
Padres manager Mike Shildt confirmed the news ahead of his team's home series opener against the Diamondbacks.
Tatis Jr. touched upon his bone injury in the right thigh, reflecting on missing the Midsummer Classic. He said:
"It can get worse and we don't want that," Tatis added. "I was playing through it and I probably could have kept going, but the doctors recommended to heal it now so that way it doesn't get worse. It's just better that way."
Fernando Tatis Jr. was voted as the outfield starter for the NL team along with his teammate Jurickson Profar. Tatis Jr.'s previous All-Star nod came in 2021 when he played as a shortstop for the team.
