After winning the first two games of their four-game series against the Cleveland Guardians, the Kansas City Royals continued their series at Progressive Field. In Tuesday night’s game, the Royals took a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
The club maintained its lead but faced a scare in the seventh inning when Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. was hit by a pitch from Guardians pitcher Pedro Avila.
After going 0-1 with a foul, Witt was hit by a 91.5 mph sinker on his right arm and was visibly in pain while holding his hand. However, some fans could be heard booing, feeling that the MVP contender leaned into the pitch.
The Royals’ trainer checked on Bobby Witt Jr. on the field, after which he decided to stay in the game. The 2024 All-Star leads the majors with a .346 batting average and 113 runs.
Bobby Witt Jr. has 183 hits in 529 at-bats, with 27 homers and 94 RBIs. In February, Witt signed a franchise-record, 11-year, $288.7 million contract extension with the Kansas City Royals.

Royals’ Paul DeJong started his team’s two-run lead hitting a 395-foot homer in the second inning. Maikel Garcia’s RBI single brought another run for the team in the seventh inning.
A wild pitch by Guardians' Scott Barlow allowed Adam Frazier to score, followed by Michael Massey’s RBI single, making the score 5-1. Freddy Fermin’s RBI single in the ninth inning set the final score of the game.
The Kansas City Royals won 6-1 against the Cleveland Guardians in the third game of their series. The Royals are now tied with the Guardians in the AL Central race after three consecutive wins against the division rivals with both teams on 75 wins, 58 losses, and a .564 winning percentage.
Both teams will face each other in the finale of their four-game series on Wednesday with the Royals eyeing a series sweep to take the lead over the Guardians in the AL Central.
