With the Cleveland Guardians away in Minnesota, the Savannah Bananas took over Progressive Field for a stop on their Banana World Tour. The barnstorming team had many cameo appearances, including one by MMA fighter Zion Clark, who pinch-ran using his hands.
The Bananas have become a cultural phenomenon with their unique games that often include fun showcases like mid-inning games, unusual celebrations and celebrity-fan interactions. One of their attractions also features local celebrities in their lineup.
During their game in Cleveland, Ohio native Zion Clark joined the team. Born without legs because of Caudal Regression Syndrome, Clark has since become an MMA fighter and wheelchair racer, generating buzz as the "fastest man on two hands." He was brought in as a pinch runner in the sixth inning but was left stranded on third base when the inning ended.
The game also saw appearances from two Guardians alumni, Corey Kluber and Jason Kipnis. Kluber spent nine years with the team and won two Cy Young awards, and Kipnis was a key part of Cleveland's 2016 AL pennant-winning team.
Savannah Bananas' game ends with a fan catch
Banana Ball rules state that every play inside the stadium is legal, meaning fans are also a part of the action and can record a catch. This rule became decisive in Savannah Bananas' 3-1 win over the Party Animals, the team who tour with them, as a fan-catch in the top of the ninth inning ended the game with two outs.
Progressive Field was the fourth MLB stadium the Bananas have played in this season. They have already brought Banana Ball to Tampa Bay, Houston and Boston. They are also scheduled to play two games at the Philadelphia Phillies home stadium, Citizens Bank Park, in September, and at the Miami Marlins' LoanDepot Park in October.
