In baseball, a flamethrower is a pitcher that throws with great velocity. Savannah Bananas have given a whole new meaning to the term. On Friday, Kyle Luigs of the Bananas threw one of the most bizarre and outlandish pitches in the history of the game.
For those that are unfamiliar with the Savannah Bananas team, they are one of the country's most popular exhibition baseball teams. Described by many as the Harlem Globetrotters of baseball, they set out with the primary purpose of entertaining fans. The team has just started their 2023 Banana Ball World Tour and did not fail to disappoint in their first game.
"Nope, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. Kyle Luigs just pitched a ball on fire." - Savnnah Bananas
The team is owned by Jesse Cole. A former college player himself, Cole understands the game at a high level. He also understands that baseball should be fun and entertaining for the fans.
Cole invested his own money to build a team in Savannah, Georgia. The team competed in the Coastal Plain League. Since their inception in 2016, the team has gone on to become one of the nation's most popular baseball attractions.
The Savannah Bananas have implemented a unique set of rules called "Banana Ball"
Jesse Cole realized early on that in order to improve the fan experience at baseball games, he had to get creative.
On one special occasion, former Boston Red Sox pitcher Bill Lee came down to the field and struck out a player.
"75-year-old Red Sox Hall of Famer, Bill Lee, came down from the stands with a beer in hand and then proceeded to strike somebody out. Power move." - Savannah Bananas.
As of 2022, the Bananas will only play Banana Ball. The rules of Banana Ball are wild and out of the box. The games last no longer than two hours. No bunting allowed. Players can steal first base. If a foul ball is caught by a fan, it is considered an out.
The rules seem to have struck a chord with baseball fans around the country who are tired of the slower format. The Bananas may not have as much talent as some of their MLB peers, but games are regularly sold out. Fans can't seem to get enough of the Bananas.
