Shohei Ohtani's LA Dodgers clinched their 11th NL West title in 12 years as they completed a 7-2 win over the San Diego Padres. After the game, all players' families joined them on the pitch in celebration, including Ohtani and his wife Mamiko Tanaka along with their pet dog Decoy.
Tanaka's appearance at the Dodgers' home stadium is a rare one but could be the first of many division-clinching games as Shohei Ohtani's career unfolds in LA. The couple had a private relationship and made things public with an official announcement about their marriage in February of this year.
On Friday, videos from the post-game ceremonies showed Ohtani in a cheerful mood picking up Decoy in his arms. Meanwhile, Mamiko sported a jacket over her shoulders with 'OHTANI' inscribed on the clothing. The couple were all smiles as they posed for the cameras.
Other videos also showed the pair taking selfies and laughing over Decoy's reluctance to look into the cameras.
Shohei Ohtani elated after Thursday's win
Shohei Ohtani continued his superlative form at the plate getting three hits on Friday. After two ground outs in his first two at-bats, the 30-year-old hit a single in the sixth but was unable to score. In the next inning, the 30-year-old hit an RBI single with two players on base, as Enrique Hernandez scored. He followed it up with a third consecutive game with a double.
The DH has 22 hits in 9 games including 18 RBIs. That includes him reaching the 50-50 club and then eclipsing it to currently stand at 53 home runs and 56 stolen bases.
After the game, Ohtani spoke about his happiness in winning the first division title of his MLB career. He also stated that he along with his team were looking to finish the job as they turned up to Dodger Stadium.
“I'm really happy,” Ohtani said through an interpreter. “Today I came to the stadium really wanting to clinch.”
The Dodgers are looking to go deep into the postseason in 2024 after two back-to-back disappointing exits in the NL Division Series. If their form persists then they will be able to have more celebrations at Dodger Stadium.
