Team Great Britain had upset on its mind against defending World Baseball Classic champion Team USA Saturday night, but Kyle Schwarber had other ideas.
Great Britain outfielder Trayce Thompson opened the game with a stunning solo home run off of USA starting pitcher Adam Wainwright, and the lead held until the USA mustered up two runs in the third inning.
Still, the outcome of the contest, and the matter of if Great Britain could pull off perhaps the greatest upset in the history of the WBC remained in question until Schwarber stepped to the plate in the bottom of the fourth.
With two on, Schwarber launched a moonshot homer over the left-center field wall and cleared the swimming pool that resides beyond the fence at Chase Field in Phoenix, Ariz.
Schwarber's teammates saluted him as he rounded the bases, and Team USA could heave a sigh of relief.
Team USA among World Baseball Classic favorites
Along with the Dominican Republic and Japan, the USA counts itself as one of the favorites to win this year's World Baseball Classic. Japan has already qualified for the knockout round, but the Dominicans were upset by Venezuela in their tournament opener on Saturday. Thanks to Schwarber, the USA avoided suffering the same fate.
