The Los Angeles Dodgers aren't a team that can be kept quiet for long and just when the New York Yankees fans were flirting with the idea of forcing Game 6, the NL West team came back roaring back on Wednesday.
Trailing 5-0 after four innings, the Dodgers were under the pump at a raucous Yankees Stadium. However, the game took an exciting turn when the Yankee's defense faltered to allow Freddie Freeman at the plate with the bases loaded.
Freeman drove two runs to make it 5-3 as Teoscar Hernandez walked to the plate. Hernandez followed in Freeman's footsteps with a two-run double to tie the game after a stunning five-run assault at the top of the fifth.
Yankees ace Gerrit Cole, who was hitless before the fifth, had himself and the defense to blame for the collapse. Cole pitched 6.2 innings, allowing five runs, all of them unearned in a nightmare fifth inning.
Dodgers come from behind in thrilling Game 5 to clinch World Series
Veteran Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton restored the Yankees lead after a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning. Stanton had earlier hit a solo homer, his seventh home run of the season, to help the Yankees to a 5-0 lead.
But the Yankees failed to hold onto the lead as the Dodgers scored two runs in the top of the eighth to make it 8-7. Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen held his nerve as the Yankees tried their best to claw their way back into the game to no avail.
Dave Roberts' team prevailed to clinch a thrilling win in Game 5, securing the Dodgers' second World Series title in five years and ending the Yankees' hopes of a first World Series ring since 2009.
Dodgers slugger Freddie Freeman, who racked in four home runs, including a walk-off grand slam in Game 1, was named the World Series MVP for his record-breaking heroics.
