At this point in his career, Trevor Bauer might be better known as a social media personality than a former Cy Young Award-winning baseball star. That does not take away from his accomplishments on the field with the Diablos Rojos del México this past season in the Mexican League. However, he has seen his presence on social media continue to grow.
Even though Bauer has not pitched in the MLB since 2021, he remains a popular and polarizing figure in baseball. The former Los Angeles Dodgers star wants to improve his image among fans and highlights his personality through consistent social media posts and lengthy video blogs on YouTube.
On Friday, the star pitcher posted a video on X, formerly Twitter, of him using a variety of grocery store items in place of a baseball. Bauer used a mix of apples, cucumbers, limes and potatoes to try and record a strikeout. Like a common smoothie, the results were mixed.
"We've got the apple slider," Bauer said to open the video.
The former Cincinnati Reds pitcher couldn't record a swinging strike. However, he did not struggle too much with the apple. While he missed the zone on his first try, on the second attempt with the apple, he forced the batter to hit a foul ball.
"Let's see if I can land the cucumber... I almost landed it for a strike," Bauer said after missing the zone with a full cucumber.
His next grocery store item was a quarter chunk of cucumber. Although he was looking to get another strike in the count, he eventually lost control of the throw and almost took out the batter.
"What do you call a hit by cucumber? What is that?" Bauer said.
Although Bauer couldn't get a strikeout (threw ball 4 with a lime), he did give the batter an extra item to hit. With a potato, Bauer threw one right in the strike zone and the hitter got all of it, exploding the potato instantly. At the end of the video, he promised another grocery store item at-bat soon for his followers.
Trevor Bauer could soon take his talents to new country following his season in Mexico
After winning the Mexican League title, earning an All-Star selection and being named the Mexican League Pitcher of the Year, it's safe to say that Trevor Bauer's stint south of the border was a success. It remains to be seen if he can channel that success into another MLB contract or not. However, it appears he has another opportunity at a new challenge.
Baseball insider Santana Martinez reported on X in September that teams in the Dominican Winter League have contacted Bauer to add him to their rosters. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the former Cy Young Award winner. However, it's clear that he still has plenty of life left in his arm.
