Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is widely regarded as one of the more jovial characters in the MLB, often playing pranks on teammates and opponents. Atlanta Braves infielder Giovanny Urshela became the latest victim for the Toronto Blue Jays slugger when the two teams squared on Saturday evening.
Guerrero Jr. slapped Urshela on the arm near the team dugout when the Braves infielder had his eyes on a foul ball flying into the stands. Although Guerrero Jr. may not have harbored any violent intentions, his actions were certainly not well received by the Braves third baseman.
A video clip of the incident was posted on Reddit.
On Saturday, the Blue Jays were on the road for the second clash of their three-game series against the Braves at Truist Park. The two teams are in very different predicaments right now. The Braves are chasing a spot in the national wild card race, while the Blue Jays are stuck at the bottom of the American League East.
During the game whihle the Blue Jays were batting, a high foul ball sailed over the leftfield line, and Braves third baseman Urshela gave chase to make the catch. He eventually stopped near the visiting team's dugout as the ball flew into the stands.
Urshela was leaning on the fence when Guerrero Jr. came up to him and grabbed his uniform. Urshela was caught by surprise at Guerrero Jr.'s actions and instinctively tried to slap him. Luckily, the blow did not connect, and the two players momentarily exchanged glares before going their separate ways.
Eventually, the game ended with a 9-5 victory for the Blue Jays, tying the series with the Braves at 1-1.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. stays red hot despite Blue Jays' struggles
The 2024 season started with big expectations for the Toronto Blue Jays, but those were dashed well before they could gather momentum. The Blue Jays were already out of the playoff race at the midseason interval, but Vladimir Guerrero Jr. continued to enjoy the best season of his career.
Guerrero Jr. earned his fourth consecutive All-Star selection earlier in the year. He is currently batting .327/.399/.561 with a .980 OPS. The 25-year-old first baseman continues to swing a hot bat after recording six home runs and 17 RBIs in August.
