The New York Yankees started their three-game series finale with the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park after splitting the first two games. However, Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodon didn’t have a good start to Wednesday’s game.
Rodon started the first inning by giving up Dylan Crews' first homer of the season. He then allowed runners on bases with no outs, with James Wood on third and Andrés Chaparro on first.
While facing Juan Yepez, Rodon stepped off the pitcher’s mound due to problems with the PitchCom device. However, Rodon was quickly called out for a balk by home plate umpire Tony Randazzo.

The balk call allowed James Wood on third base to score a run giving the Nationals a 2-0 lead. Carlos Rodon was left visibly frustrated with the call and went on to confront the home plate umpire to discuss it.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone quickly made his way out from the dugout to join Rodon as he pleaded his case to the umpire, explaining that issues with his PitchCom device led him to step off the rubber.
However, the umpires didn’t change their decision and the call stood as the game eventually resumed.

In the second inning, Rodon allowed a single to Nasim Nunez, who then drove in his first career run. Shortly after, James Wood also hit an RBI single off Rodon, making the score 4-1.
While facing Dylan Crews, he gave up an RBI double, allowing Jacob Young to score a run. The two-time All-Star pitched for 5.2 innings in the end, giving up five earned runs on eight hits with two walks while striking out eight batters.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. later scored a run for the Yankees in the second inning by hitting a 411-foot homer. Captain Aaron Judge’s RBI single in the fifth inning allowed Alex Verdugo to score yet another run for the Bronx Bombers.
After maintaining their 5-2 lead until the end, the Washington Nationals defeated the Yankees in their series finale. New York (78-55) currently leads the AL East standings with a .586 winning percentage, while the Washington Nationals (60-73) are fourth in the NL East standings with a .451 percentage.
The Yankees will open their three-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday next at Yankee Stadium.
