New York Yankees Austin Wells seems to be having a good time both on and off the field. While the Yankees are all but certain for the postseason, his four-year-old social media dancing video resurfaced and is going viral.
A 2020 video of Wells dancing to the Bag Raiders' song 'Shooting Stars' was shown on the big screen before the Yankees' pre-game hitters meeting on Friday. This was followed by fellow teammate Anthony Volpe suggesting to use this song as his new walk-up song.
Currently, Austin Wells is using Whole Lotta Love (1994 Remaster) by Led Zeppelin II.
Austin Wells adds to changing walk-up song after an eventful Friday
The New York Yankees started the series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals on a winning note as they clinched the home opener 6-3. Austin Wells, who was elevated to the clean-up spot, went 2-4, crushing two home runs to drive in four runs.
Upon Anthony Volpe's suggestion, Wells said about adding the new walk-up song he premiered prior to Friday's game.
“I wanted to change my walk-up song anyways,’’ said Wells after the game.
Austin Wells' first home run of the day was a two-run shot against Erick Fedde in the third inning, which gave Yankees a 4-2 lead. His next home run came off against Riley O’Brien in the eighth inning, which gave the Yankees a 6-3 lead.
It has been 20 games since Wells was elevated to the cleanup spot, hitting behind Aaron Judge in the lineup. During this stretch, he has gone 28-for-81 with five homers and 21 RBIs.
“I’m having a lot of fun with it,” Wells said of hitting behind Judge. “I’m accepting it and embracing the challenge.” [via ESPN].
“He knows the strike zone…he’s swinging the bat well, he’s making good decisions,’’ said Juan Soto about Austin Wells. “That’s what you need behind a big bat like Judge.’’
Manager Aaron Boone was also full of praise for the catcher in the post-game conference.
“You go back, the catching was ahead of where we expected last year and at the start of this year, kind of waiting on the bat to come and it sure has,” Boone said.
“He puts together really good at-bats and then he’s got that power in there, too. So this is what we’ve seen from home now for probably more than a couple months now, just a real middle of the order presence."
Austin Wells' winning performance at the plate helped the Yankees improve to 79-56 as they seek to become the second team after the Los Angeles Dodgers to reach 80 wins this season.
