This past weekend, the Philadelphia Phillies squared off against the New York Mets for a two-game series in London. The third such baseball clash to take place in the British capital, the series is a part of MLB's ongoing strategy to grow the international appeal of the game.

While thousands of Brits piled into the London Stadium over the weekend, the series was particularly special for one young fan named Mason. Before the game, the MLB-obsessed eight year old was approached by influencer Zechery Dereniowski. After letting Mason choose between £1000 or a "mystery MLB baseball," the young fan selected the latter.

In the clip, Mason claimed that he found baseball while he was undergoing a Diabetes diagnosis, and that his favorite team was the Philadelphia Phillies. Upon receiving the mystery ball, Mason unwrapped an invitation that gave him and his family the greenlight to meet several players before the game on Saturday.

Among those who greeted the mesmerized eight-year-old were Paco Figueroa, and Trea Turner. Mason was able to then take his place in the audience to watch the Phillies defeat the New York Mets by a score of 7-2 in front of a crowd of over 53,000 people.

The clash between the Mets and Phillies was the third series since 2019 to take place on the banks of the Thames in London. Last year, the Chicago Cubs played the St. Louis Cardinals. MLB has already confirmed that it plan to runs this popular overseas showdown again in 2024, further growing the league's popular appeal on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.

London Series gave British Phillies fans chance to see NL powerhouse

Though they split the series in London, the Phillies are arguably still the best team in baseball. While young Mason may have had the chance to enjoy more than the average fan, that does not mean that others didn't get the chance to enjoy themselves. As Phillies fan Christina Carrero told NBC Philadelphia:

"It was so great to have so many Phillies fans, and London was so warm and welcoming. It was fantastic"

With the summer only getting started, Phillies fans from around the world will have plenty more chances to see the special things that this team is doing.
