On Saturday, Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees continued their hot streak with a 4-1 victory against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. However, captain Aaron Judge made their 37th victory of the season more special.
Judge created a first-ever milestone in MLB history by becoming the only player with 12+ doubles and 11+ homers in a 20-game span since 1901. He went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run to give the Yankees an early lead. His stellar performance impressed fans and experts alike, including his teammate, Marcus Stroman.
Stroman, who pitched six shutout innings, was amazed by his captain’s show. At the same time, he’s excited to be a teammate of Yankee stars like Juan Soto and Gerrit Cole.
“Just watching greatness,” said Marcus Stroman, per Gary Phillips of New York Daily News. “Sometimes you can take it for granted, to be honest. But I’ll be sitting with my grandkids at some point saying I got the opportunity to play with Aaron Judge, Juan Soto and Gerrit Cole, because those are going to be three of the best players to ever play this game.”
The names Stroman mentioned are definitely a big part of the Yankees lineup. This year, Aaron Judge leads the American League in double bases (18), home runs (17), walks (43), OBP (.413), SLG (.635), OPS (1.050) and total bases (123).
Next to Judge, Juan Soto also leads the team in every way possible. Meanwhile, Stroman has yet to share the rotation with AL Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole, who’s recovering from an elbow injury and expected to return in a month or two.
Aaron Boone amazed by Aaron Judge
The New York Yankees skipper, Aaron Boone, said he was amazed by Judge but not surprised. To him, the 32-year-old Yankee All-Star has always been “unique."
“I’ve witnessed a lot of amazing baseball from Aaron Judge now for the last six, seven years,” Boone said, via Gary Phillips of New York Daily News.
“So anytime he does something that’s a first or unique or whatever adjective you want to put on it, it frankly doesn’t surprise me, just because I know how good he is. When he gets locked in, it’s just different.”
The Yankees are leading the AL East and the league overall with a 37-17 record. With Saturday’s victory, they won the road series in San Diego, and tonight they’ll have the chance to sweep the Padres. They’ll next visit the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim from Tuesday for a three-game series.
