The New York Mets rebounded to win the series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday. The batting lineup ably supported a strong effort from the entire pitching staff as the Mets won 3-2. Clubhouse leader Francisco Lindor felt confident about the team's performance during a tough stretch.
Three veteran batters did all the scoring for New York. Pete Alonso and Lindor hit a pair of solo home runs while Jose Iglesias hit an RBI single in the ninth inning that proved to be the difference. David Peterson had yet another strong start, lowering his ERA to 2.83 with a two-run ball in 7.0 innings pitched, while Edwin Diaz closed out the ninth for the win.
The win pushed the Mets to an overall 70-64 record with six wins in their last 10 games. They are still 3.0 games behind the Atlanta Braves, who hold the third NL wild card spot. But their recent run of form has come against the likes of the Diamondbacks, Baltimore Orioles and San Diego Padres and the team is looking confident.
Francisco Lindor was pleased with their team's performance and felt these were good signs for September.
“We can compete against anybody. I know at times we haven't played our best against teams that are not in contention, but it seems like the teams are competing, we play very well against them. That's a good sign, we just have to find a way of being in the postseason and anything can happen."
Francisco Lindor knows there is no room for complacency as Mets face White Sox
Right after facing three teams aiming for playoff contention, the Mets will travel to Chicago for a three-game series over the weekend against the White Sox. Francisco Lindor spoke about the importance of the fixture, knowing that the Mets cannot let go of the momentum they have gathered after an electric series in Arizona.
"We gotta go out there with the same intensity and it might be tougher to have the same intensity because the crowd might not be as involved as it is here. But at the end of the day, there’s big league players on the other side."
The White Sox are the worst team in all of MLB with a 31-104 record and are looking to avoid the most losses in a season for any team. NY will be looking for a clean sweep from this one.
