With just under an hour remaining until the MLB trade deadline, the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired Jack Flaherty from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for prospects Thayron Liranzo and Trey Sweeney. The deal is a massive one for the Dodgers who needed a starting pitcher in the wake of multiple injuries and James Paxton's exit.
Interestingly, the Burbank, California, native was a Dodgers fan growing up. His mother, Eileen Flaherty, shared a throwback photo from the starting pitcher's childhood (1997) where he can be seen wearing a Dodgers cap. Almost 28 years later, he will now have the opportunity to fulfill a dream by representing the Dodgers.
Upon seeing the photo shared by MLB's Instagram account, fans were quick to embrace Jack Flaherty to the Dodgers in the comments:
"Welcome home," one fan commented.
"my dawg is home!!," another wrote.
"He stayed ready!" one fan quipped.
"Fan since day 1!" another added.
"All the best MLB players come out of CA," another wrote.
There were also a few negative comments, with some fans referencing the Dodgers' NLDS loss against the Arizona Diamondbacks last season:
"All that talent to lose to the Diamondbacks," one posted.
"The amount of people with dodger derangement syndrome in these comments is insane," another added.
Yankees' interest in Jack Flaherty faded after checking his medical records
One team that was reportedly interested in Jack Flaherty was the New York Yankees.
The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported that the Bronx Bombers had a "preliminary" deal to acquire Flaherty but pulled out "after reviewing the right-hander's medical records."
The veteran pitcher has suffered lower back problems this season, requiring two injections in three weeks in July and even costing him one start:
"I can't comment on medical stuff with trades," Tigers' President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris told reporters after the trade with Dodgers. "You would have to ask the other teams. Jack is healthy. If we didn't trade him, he was going to start for us on Thursday."
Jack Flaherty is one of the hurlers in the conversation for the Cy Young Award this season. He has posted a 7-5 record with a 2.95 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 133 strikeouts across 106.2 innings so far this season.
