Anthony Volpe went from being a relatively little-known minor leaguer to the starting shortstop for the New York Yankees on opening day.
The 2019 Yankees first-round draft pick split his 2022 season between Double-A and Triple-A affiliates of the team. In 132 games between the two leagues, Volpe hit 249/.342/.460 with 21 home runs and 65 RBIs.
His minor-league stats were good enough for him to get invited to the Yankees' 2023 training camp in Florida. Although he was clearly a rising star, few expected the New Jersey-native to make the opening day roster.

When Volpe was selected by the Yankees nearly four years ago, he agreed to a $2.7 million signing bonus from the team to forego the conclusion of his studies at Vanderbilt University. As a pre-arbitration rookie, Volpe will cost the Bombers just $600,000 in 2023, a number that could increase by a very wide margin in the coming years.
Coming into training camp, Volpe never appeared as a second baseman for an MLB team. With Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who arrived in the Bronx via a trade with the Minnesota Twins in 2022, slated to be the shortstop for the team, Yankees skipper Aaron Boone decided to give Volpe a try at second base.
Anthony Volpe went off for the New York Yankees during spring training. He went 18-for-63 with three home runs and five RBIs. Additionally, his defensive play was enough to convince Boone to give Volpe the opening day start at shortstop, overriding Kiner-Falefa.
On March 30, 21-year-old Anthony Volpe took the shortstop position at Yankee Stadium, which was occupied by Derek Jeter for two decades by the legendary Derek Jeter. He went 1-for-2 with a walk and his first career stolen base in the Yankees' 5-0 opening thrashing of the San Francisco Giants.

Anthony Volpe's spot at shortstop is far from permanent
Although Volpe had a very average MLB debut, there are still 161 games left in the 2023 season. The youngster has fans behind him, but as he will soon learn, keeping a spot in the big league is about being the best of the best all the time. Should he begin to falter, there are many players ready to take over his spot.
