Two years after allegations of biased calling during the New York Yankees' ALDS showdown against the Cleveland Guardians, veteran announcer Bob Costas is set to return for their upcoming matchup against the Kansas City Royals.
In 2022, Bob Costas was the play-by-play announcer alongside color commentator Jeff Francoeur. Throughout the series, which the Yankees ended up winning in five games, fans complained about Costas.
He was called out by fans for providing unnecessary historical details about the franchise, something that die-hard New York fans were already aware of. Moreover, they also felt he was biased in his reactions to some of the Yankees' plays.
After it was announced that Costas was returning, Yankees fans took to X to share their disappointment.
"What did we do to deserve this," one fan wrote.
"Why is the MLB still letting Bob Costas call postseason games man. There could be a monstrous game-tying HR late in the game & the most you get from him is ‘This one has a chance, and it is indeed a home run. Wow. We are even again’ with a tone like he’s narrating a documentary," a fan said.
Fans criticized Costas and even said that his best days were already behind him.
"Are you kidding me they gave us Bob Costas and Ron Darling (biggest Yankees hater out there) again? Who has it worse?" another fan said.
"Costas is a past his prime announcer. He’s not good anymore," a fan wrote.
"Bob costas is gonna turn my tv into black and white," one fan said.
"Mailbag question: did you know most of your readers/listeners appear to hate Bob Costas?" another fan wrote.
Bob Costas had called out Yankees fans for their 'idiocy'
On "The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima" in October 2022, Bob Costas didn't mince his words after he faced criticism. He fired back at the fans for claiming he and his fellow announcers were biased against the Yankees.
"I don't want to be harsh — I understand where it comes from — but to be concise, it's idiocy," Costas said. "There are people in New York who think we're somehow being unfair to the Yankees."
Game 1 of the ALDS between the Yankees and Royals is on Saturday at Yankee Stadium with the first pitch scheduled to go out at 6:38 p.m. ET.
