The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched the NL West, but potentially at the cost of Freddie Freeman. The star first baseman was in a walking boot while the team celebrated its division win. He rolled his ankle during the seventh inning but was all smiles in the dugout afterward.
However, X-rays revealed no structural damage to his ankle. He is hurt, but it doesn't look like there's any major injury. Freeman is expected to be available for the playoffs, which begin next month. For the Dodgers, thanks to their bye, they will not play until October 5.
The star first baseman said via ESPN:
"We've worked really hard to overcome a lot of adversity -- and it never ends, it seems like, this year. I'll do everything I possibly can to be ready."
Given that Freeman is hurt and the Dodgers have wrapped up a division title and first-round bye, it's unlikely that Freeman will play at all in the final three games.
This will give him eight days off before the first gameday in the postseason. Thus, his season may be done at a .282 batting average with 22 home runs, 89 RBI, and an .854 OPS.
Dave Roberts reflects on Dodgers division win after Freddie Freeman injury scare
Freddie Freeman had to leave the game, but the score was not in doubt at the time. The Dodgers scored twice in that inning to extend their lead when Freeman went to the clubhouse. They held on for a 7-2 win over the San Diego Padres.
It was their 95th this year and their 11th division title in 12 seasons. Manager Dave Roberts said via ESPN:
"They all feel sweet, but I'll tell you, man, with what we've gone through this year, this feels a tick sweeter. I'm just so proud of these guys, the way that we've fought the adversity, stuck together and found a way to win this division again. It was hard-fought. We earned it. Today sort of epitomized our season -- just kind of battling from behind, fighting, scratching, clawing and willing ourselves to victory."
The playoff opponents are not set since two Wild Card spots are up for grabs and the wild-card round has not been played. Still, the Dodgers will pay close attention to Freeman's ankle and the remaining games for the Arizona Diamondbacks, San Diego Padres, New York Mets, and Atlanta Braves.
