New York Yankees second baseman, Gleyber Torres, exited Friday's game against the Boston Red Sox in the fourth inning due to right groin tightness. After the game, the Yankees said that there is no need for imaging which should mean a sigh of relief for the club who are already without Anthony Rizzo at first base.
With one out and first and second loaded, Torres barreled an infield hit against Tanner Houck to shortstop Rafael Devers, who made a dive but couldn't catch Torres short at first base. Torres got the bases loaded but he was uncomfortable following the single and subsequently exited the ball game.
Aaron Boone replaced him with pinch runner Oswaldo Cabrera, who stayed in the ballgame after that.
According to Yankees beat writer Gary Phillips, Yankees managers don't see Gleyber Torres missing any time due to this injury.
The Yankees are already suffering from injury woes and the worsening of this discomfort would be another setback to their lineup. Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring strain) and Anthony Rizzo (arm fracture) are on the injured list and another at-bat joining the fray can derail their season.
Following the loss by the Red Sox on Friday, the Yankees now slid to 54-36. They were coming off a series sweep by the Cincinnati Reds as they weakened their trail to the Baltimore Orioles, who are leading the AL East division with a 55-32 record.
Gleyber Torres exited game few weeks ago for same reason
Right groin tightness has been the injury Gleyber Torres has been playing through the last couple of weeks. Friday's game saw his injury being aggravated but it all started a few weeks ago when again Torres had to exit the game.
In the 17-5 loss to the Orioles, Gleyber Torres exited the game due to the same injury after the fifth inning. At the time, Boone said:
"I don’t expect it to be anything major."
Injuries apart, Torres is having a bad season at the plate. Given his struggles, Aaron Boone decided to rest him for two games last week. Since then, he has hit 7-34, including a home run and four RBIs.
For the season, Torres is hitting .223 with an OPS of .641. He has hit eight home runs and 33 RBIs.
