Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Max Muncy left the game early against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The utility infielder has had a rough and unlucky start to the season, and it only got worse when he was removed from the game.
Muncy was fielding a ground ball when it took a bad hop and skipped off the edge of his glove. Normally, an error with a big lead wouldn't be such a big deal, but the deflection hit Muncy right between the legs.
Muncy obviously experienced a lot of pain and since the game wasn't particularly close, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts elected to pull him out of the game and give him some much-needed recovery.
Roberts said:
"He had an interaction with a baseball that he needed to catch his breath a little."
It remains to be seen how severe the damage is and he's being re-evaluated today, but he likely won't miss much time after the incident. Muncy wasn't ready to face the batter, but with the new pitch clock rules, he was going to have to.
In an effort to preserve his infielder, Roberts elected to go to the bench
Max Muncy injury: Will the star infielder miss any games?
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Muncy will be re-evaluated, but he's not expected to miss much time, if any, at all. The infielder is considered day-to-day right now.
He's out of the lineup today, but may be able to pinch hit and will more than likely return to the lineup the following game.
