The Los Angeles Dodgers took a 2-0 World Series lead against the New York Yankees after a 4-2 win in Game 2 on Saturday. However, the win came at a cost as superstar slugger Shohei Ohtani suffered an injury during the hard-fought contest.
The Japanese slugger, in the running for the NL MVP title, seemed to hurt himself in the seventh inning of the game. His sliding attempt to steal second base saw him lying in pain before exiting the game with a trainer.
Earlier reports suggested that Ohtani suffered a left shoulder injury with rumors circulating that the two-time MVP had dislocated his shoulder during his sliding attempt.
However, manager Dave Roberts confirmed after the game that Ohtani had sustained a left shoulder subluxation. The Japanese starters will undergo further tests before the team flies to New York for the next three games of the series.
“We’re going to get some tests at some point tonight, tomorrow, and then we’ll know more in the next couple of days,” Roberts said. “But the strength was great. The range of motion is good. So we’re encouraged. But obviously I can’t speculate because we don’t have the scans yet. Once we get the scans, we’ll know more.”
The Dodgers were leading 4-1 when Ohtani sustained his injury and despite his premature exit, the NL West team held on for a win after a nervy final inning that had the bases loaded for the Yankees.
Teoscar Hernandez believes in team's strength despite Shohei Ohtani's injury concern
Shohei Ohtani had a record-setting regular season in his first year for the Dodgers, and if he misses playing time in the postseason, it would be a huge blow for Roberts' team.
Dodgers' Teoscar Hernandez, who had a two-run homer in Game 2 on Saturday, reflected on Ohtani's injury with a potential stint on the sidelines.
“We’ve been battling throughout the year with a lot of injuries,” Teoscar Hernández said. “It’s not going to be a good feeling, but if he can’t go on Monday, we just have to keep doing the thing we’ve been doing for the past couple of weeks.”
If Shohei Ohtani is unable to recover in time for the next game on Monday at Yankee Stadium, the Dodgers might look at Andy Pages to fill the gap as a designated hitter.
