Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Taijuan Walker was pulled off the mound in the fourth inning against the New York Mets on Thursday. He was struck in the foot by a Starling Marte line drive during their game.

Despite giving up two runs in the first two innings, the Phillies pitcher seemed to be settling into the game when a sharp hit off Marte's bat came straight down the middle and struck his left foot. The medical team visited the mound and said that Taijuan suffered a contusion upon initial inspection, which would be examined further.

Having started his major league career with the Seattle Mariners in 2013, Taijuan Walker is an established veteran in the MLB and has played for several major league teams. His first All-Star appearance was with the Mets the 2021 and he signed a four-year, $72 million contract with the Phillies ahead of the 2023 season.

The Phillies went into Thursday's game against the Mets with the opportunity to pull off a four-game sweep and had Walker making his fourth start of the season. Pete Alonso's solo homer and Brett Baty's RBI double gave the Mets a 2-0 lead on the night before Walker's injury.

The comebacker from Starling Marte in the fourth appeared to hit the Phillies pitcher in the toes of his left foot. While the impact was enough to pull the pitcher out, further examination will be required to learn the full extent of the injury.

Phillies offense comes alive to tie the score after Taijuan Walker's injury vs the Mets

When starting pitcher Taijuan Walker was pulled from the game in the fourth inning, the New York Mets held a 2-0 lead while the Philadelphia Phillies bats struggled. However, soon after the incident, the Phillies bats came live in the sixth inning to score two RBIs to tie the game.

Third baseman Alec Bohm put the Phillies on the board with an RBI single toward left center, and Nick Castellanos followed it with a sacrifice fly which allowed Bryce Harper to score. With the Mets desperate to avoid a sweep, the game is set up for a dramatic end.
