Former US President Jimmy Carter, who died aged 100 on Sunday, was an ardent, lifelong supporter of the Atlanta Braves in the MLB. He was present to witness several great moments in the Braves' history, including when Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's home run record in 1974.
On Carter's death, the Braves released a statement:
"The Atlanta Braves are deeply saddened by the passing of President Jimmy Carter. President Carter was a testament to the best America, and Georgia, can produce. He served both his country and home state with honor his entire life.
"While the world knew him as a remarkable humanitarian and peacemaker, we knew him as a dedicated Braves fan, and we will miss having him in the stands cheering on his Braves. Our deepest condolences to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren."
Jimmy Carter was born in Plains, Georgia in 1924 to a nurse and a father who came from a long line of cotton farmers and businessmen.
After his education in Plains, he seved in the US Navy for almost a decade before returning home to look after family business following his father's death. Carter started his political career campaigning for the Georgia State Senate before going on to become the President in 1977.
Over the years (both before and after his Presidency), Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn were often seen cheering for the Braves from the stands. When Hank Aaron broke the home run record, he cheered from the stands as the governor of Georgia.
While Aaron was gifted a new car for his achievement, Governor Carter gifted him a Georgia number plate with "HR 715" written on it. Following Aaron's death in 2021, Carter said that the MLB star was one of his personal heroes and friends and called him one of the greatest players of all time.
