The New York Mets have changed the MLB landscape by landing All-Star slugger Juan Soto in unrestricted free agency. The club was able to pull a massive coup over their in-city rivals, the New York Yankees, by handing out a record-breaking 15-year $765 million deal to the former World Series champion.

While the New York Mets were able to land the biggest fish in free agency, there are still some lingering questions about whether or not they are considered favorites for the World Series. Even with Soto bringing world-class ability to the team, there are still some areas that need to be addressed. Given the nature of the its contracts, it may need to get creative on the free agent or trade market.

Here's a look at some of the next steps that the New York Mets may need to make after bringing in Juan Soto

Starting Pitching

One of the biggest areas that the New York Mets will still need to address this offseason is their pitching staff. While they were already able to bring in Frankie Montas earlier this offseason, their rotation is still incomplete. The front office will need to further bolster their rotation around ace Kodai Senga.

While they could look to pursue big-name free agents such as Corbin Burnes or Max Fried, depending on how much financial resources they are willing to spend, they may need to look for cheaper options. Nick Pivetta could be an interesting target.

Batting Depth

The New York Mets will have some of the best players in the MLB in their lineup next season with Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor leading the charge. However, the rest of the lineup around them, even though they have potential, might leave something to be desired.

With the potential departures of Pete Alonso, Harrison Bader and J.D. Martinez, the New York Mets front office will need to bring in enough talent to surround their big free agent signing. There are several solid, affordable players remaining on the open market who could benefit the team, including Joc Pederson, Carlos Santana and Randal Grichuk.

Infield

The Mets' infield will be spearheaded by Francisco Lindor; however, beyond the star shortstop, there are questions about the rest of the lineup. Mark Vientos took a major step forward in 2024 and should play a big role for the club. Aside from those two, Jeff McNeil struggled in 2024 and young players such as Ronny Mauricio remain largely unproven.
