St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol had some choice words for his star outfielder Tyler O'Neill. The outfielder was thrown out at home by Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. recently.
It appeared that O'Neill wasn't running very hard around third base as he was trying to score from second on a base hit. He was thrown out with ease, which made it look like a foolish decision to run in the first place.
Marmol wasn't happy with the effort on that play and he and O'Neill discussed the play and it was clear he was unhappy with what had transpired as it cost the Cardinals a run.
During a post-game press conference, Marmol called out the outfielder via Sports Illustrated:
“That’s not our style of play as far as the effort, rounding the bag there. It’s unacceptable.”
The run would have cut the deficit to two runs in the seventh inning.
Tyler O'Neill, Oliver Marmol involved in spat
Tyler O'Neill confirmed that he and his manager had discussed the issue, but refuted the idea that he wasn't running hard:
“He didn’t think I gave the best effort. I’m out here every day grinding my ass off, giving it my all and trying to stay on the field for 160 games out here. Like I said, I just got to get a better jump next time and I guess just get around the base a little quicker and be in there next time.”
He wasn't all that pleased with what Marmol had said about him:
“I’m trying to score that run of course. Not out there to dog it at all. Those are pretty strong words from [Marmol], so that’s good to know.”
It's unclear how this will affect either party or the team moving forward.
