Oscar Mercado is a Colombian-American professional baseball player. He was born on Dec 16, 1994, in Cartagena, Colombia. His father, Oscar Sr. was a general contractor and also played soccer. He has a twin sister, Nathalie and an older brother, Juan.
Their family emigrated to the United States when Oscar was just seven years old. He grew up in Florida and attended Gaither High School. Furthermore, he also played collegiate baseball at Florida State University.
When he was first selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2013, he played mostly in the minor leagues. This led to the Cardinals assigning him to their 40-man roster and sending him to pay for the Memphis Redbirds in 2018. However, he was traded to the Cleveland Guardians.
On May 14, 2019, he made his debut with the Cleveland Indians against the Chicago White Sox. After playing for the Cleveland Guardians from 2018-2022, he was designated for assignment.
Although picked up by the Philadelphia Phillies, he played only one game with them before he was designated for assignment again. After being re-acquired by the Cleveland Guardians and spending his second stint with them, he returned to the St. Louis Cardinals under a minor league contract in 2022. He was finally selected to the active roster on May 17, 2023.
