Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan is making a name for himself in Major League Baseball. An important point of discussion is the outfielder's nationality and heritage.
Stephen Kwan is Asian American. He has both Chinese and Japanese roots. He is also interested in embracing and sharing his Asian background. He said:
"I think just kind of accepting who we are as Asians and just being proud of it, it's cool, it's cool to be who you are. You shouldn’t shun it- even though maybe other people are saying otherwise-but just being really proud, showing some love and giving off love.”
The 25-year-old outfielder also stated that, while now he is proud to be Asian, at one time, he was made fun of for being an Asian on a baseball team. He tolerated the insensitive comments.
“But I think it’s really cool to be Asian and [and ] you know, kind of [draw] from those cultures.”
Kwan now hopes to be a role model for the next generation of Asian-American baseball players.
Steven Kwan's MLB performance
Steven Kwan made his MLB debut on April 7, 2022 for the Cleveland Guardians. He quickly established himself as one of the young players to look out for in the MLB. He was even named the American League Rookie of the Month for April and September 2022.
Kwan has highly impressive MLB statistics. He has a batting average of .298, along with six home runs. He also has 57 runs batted in. Surely, this youngster will be a role model for Asian American baseball players for years to come.
