The 2025 MLB draft represents the chance for all teams to find their next superstar. Players like Paul Skenes, Wyatt Langford, Nolan Schanuel, Jackson Holliday, Zach Neto, Jace Jung and more were all selected in the last three drafts and have become some of baseball's biggest stars.
The draft will feature thousands of players, and only a few will ever go on to become superstars in the MLB. That said, it's still the best chance for every team to retool and look for their next building block. Here's what you need to know.
When is the 2025 MLB draft?
The 2025 MLB draft will begin on July 13, 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia. It will conclude on July 15, 2025, with all players assigned to their respective teams. The latter rounds are likely to include a lot of players who opt to return to college instead, but there will be quite a lot of players selected.
The MLB draft lottery has already concluded. The lottery to determine who picks where in 2025 was complete, with the Washington Nationals landing first overall. The Seattle Mariners and St. Louis Cardinals moved up significantly, too.
Key prospects and what to expect
Ironically, the top prospect in the 2025 MLB draft is the brother of a former first-overall pick and a former top prospect overall. Baltimore Orioles star Jackson Holliday's brother Ethan Holliday, a shortstop/third baseman, is the top 2025 prospect right now.
The rest of the top 10 are:
- Outfielder Jace LaViolette, Texas A&M
- Pitcher Jamie Arnold, Florida State
- Pitcher Tyler Bremner, UC Santa Barbara
- Pitcher Seth Hernandez, California (HS)
- Shortstop Kayson Cunningham, Texas (HS)
- Second baseman Aiva Arquette, Oregon State
- Third basemen Xavier Neyens, Washington (HS)
- Pitcher/first baseman Kruz Schoolcraft, Oregon (HS)
- Outfielder Brendan Summerhill, Arizona
Eli Willits, Luke Stevenson, Cam Cannarella, Devin Taylor, Trent Caraway and Dean Curley are among other top prospects in the 2025 draft. Viewers can expect to see a lot of pitching being selected in the first round.
Of the top 40 prospects, nine are pitchers. Pitching prospects aren't all that rare, but every team is always looking for more. Four of the top 10 prospects are pitchers, so there could be a run on them.
